In just over 6 weeks I will be turning the big 25, quarter of a century old. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about it. I've always seen myself as older, a bit more 'grown up' (or boring) than others. Yet there is that niggling feeling that I haven't succeeded in everything I had aimed for by this birthday, an arbitrary day that really means nothing significant to the outside world, but to me, does.

I don't know about you, but comparing myself to others is a big failure of mine. He/She has bought a house, they've moved in together, she got a promotion, she's going travelling, he has a more exciting job than me, even their flat is prettier than mine! Where here I am, struggling to pay the bills and buy food each month let alone save to buy a house.

Social media doesn't help this feeling of inadequacy. Posts about expensive holidays, beautiful clothes & every weekend filled with exciting adventures. Bloggers having the most amazing opportunities, influencers being asked to collaborate with brands. More followers on Bloglovin, on Instagram, on Twitter. Its all comparison and it doesn't get you anywhere.

"Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle"

"The only person you should try to be better than, is the person you were yesterday"

Stop letting someone else's success bring you down. Set realistic goals. You are your own you, and you need to do things your own way. A birthday does not define where you should be in life, everyone is taking different paths to where we want to be. Different circumstances will take people to different levels of 'success' in their life and you cannot compare yourself to those.

The years of taking risks & doing what YOU want to do.
Stop comparing yourself to others, live your life & praise yourself for how far you have actually come. Remember you didn't know F all when you decided the years you would have achieved certain goals: Married by 27, Children by 28, own a house somewhere before that, a career already taken off. What is realistic for YOU, not for those around you.

Putting it into practice:

Stop trying to tick societies boxes, everyone is an individual and you can do whatever you want whenever you want.Want to join the circus? Go for it! No aspiration to own a house, thats fine! Love being a single pringle. Good for you! Its your life, own it.

Take a look at what you have achieved, where were you 1 year ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago? I'm sure you've come a long way!

Stop looking at social media as a comparison, look at it as a celebration of everyone and where they are in their life right now. You're doing great things too, so give yourself a pat on the back.

Remember you're not alone. I bet if you asked any of your friends, they too have insecurities about where they are on the 'success' ladder.

Give yourself a break, a pat on the back, and LIVE. Success is not a race or a destination, its a personal journey and you can get there whichever way you want.
